🦾 Most things don't matter
Dear Melius Humano (Better Human),
Most things don't matter.
When they do matter, they usually matter less than our reptilian brains make them out to be.
We spend most of our lives worried about the future and obsessing over the past.
The modern environment has turned us into EVERYTHING-BUT-NOW machines.
Like Lao Tzu said, "If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present."
Imagine someone cuts you off in traffic. You're pissed. Rightly so. This guy just endangered your life. (It’s usually a guy, though not always.)
I’m not going to tell you that maybe he’s trying to get to the hospital or some other improbable possibility. No.
Some people drive like complete idiots. And this isn’t going to change until it’s only AI behind the wheel. Until then, reckless, drunk, and idiotic drivers are a fact of life.
How you respond when a reckless driver cuts you off is the ONLY thing that matters.
That response is binary: it either makes you safer or puts you at risk.
The safe response is to ignore it, and maybe use it to wake up and pay closer attention to the road.
The risky response is to get angry and otherwise engage the driver. (Road rage kills people every single day.)
Someone cutting you off in traffic means nothing… unless you make it mean something.
The same is true for everything in life.
You choose what matters every single day by what you give your mind to.
Every worry, frustration, and anxiety is a choice.
All the petty disagreements, gossip, and drama are your choice to feed.
When you starve negative people and thoughts of fuel, they die out.
Then later on you look back and realize how completely and utterly pointless it all was.
The trick is doing that in the moment. That’s hard. Sometimes impossible.
Part of the the problem we modern humans face is our addiction to comfort. The modern world—and America, more specifically—is turning us all into narcissists addicted to comfort and programmed to believe that we should have everything we want and nothing we don't.
So we can't handle it when things don't go our way.
We’re so hyper-sensitive to our comfort that we can’t deal with anything. To say modern humans are soft would be the understatement of the century.
I can’t give you a template for controlling your mind and choices. You have to do that work.
The work never ends, but you get better, and you can reach a place where you've mostly cut out negative people, information, ideas, and irrational thoughts from your life.
Here’s a free video to help you with that. (Highly recommended) How to Own Your own Mind by Napoleon Hill
