🦾 Knowing yourself is true...
Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.
-Lao Tzu
It’s estimated that something like 90% of people are un-self-aware.
They may have no internal dialogue / don’t think about who they are, why they do what they do, and why they want what they want.
They just go through life responding to whatever’s around them.
You understand why the world is how it is when you understand this. Why politics is the way it is. Why are the Internet and social media the way they are? You understand everything.
The problem is that if you want a great life, you must think, become self-aware, and know yourself.
And maybe that’s why only a handful generally lead extraordinary lives… and why the rest lead lives of quiet desperation, as Thoreau recognized over 150 years ago.
“You become what you think about.” -Earl Nightingale
And if what you think about is chosen for you by the people and media around you, well, I don’t have to explain…

Walking will change your life
Walking can transform your life.
Most of the great thinkers, philosophers, scientists, inventors, and composers, were walkers.
Need to think, decompress, innovate? Take a walk:
“Thoughts come clearly while one walks.” – Thomas Mann
Angry, overwhelmed, disregulated? Walk:
“The best remedy for a short temper is a long walk.” – Jacqueline Schiff
Want a better day in general? Walk:
“After a day’s walk everything has twice its usual value.” – George Macauley Trevelyan
Here are some of the greats and their walking routines:
Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) - The Precise Stroller
Kant took a walk at precisely the same time every day in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia) at 3:30 PM.
His stroll was so regular that locals reportedly set their clocks by it.
He walked alone, letting his mind wander.
Kant valued routine and mental reflection. Walking allowed him to detach from his work and subconsciously process complex ideas.
Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) - The Nature Enthusiast
Thoreau spent several hours daily walking in the woods near his home in Concord, Massachusetts.
He walked for 4 to 5 hours, observing nature and pondering philosophical ideas.
Thoreau used walking to connect with nature and gain spiritual insights. He viewed nature as a source of inspiration and wisdom.
Charles Darwin (1809–1882) - The Thoughtful Explorer
Darwin took daily walks on the "Sandwalk," a path around his home in Kent, England.
He walked daily, often after lunch, to think through scientific problems.
Darwin used walking to focus his mind and develop scientific theories—the repetitive nature of walking provided a meditative rhythm for idea generation.
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) - The Creative Composer
Beethoven enjoyed long countryside walks in the afternoons after composing in the morning.
He carried a notebook to capture musical ideas that came to him during these walks.
Beethoven believed walking was essential for creativity. Nature's tranquility and the act of walking stimulated his imagination.
Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) - The Wanderer
Nietzsche frequently hiked in the Swiss Alps and Italian Riviera, walking for hours.
He composed many philosophical ideas during these long walks.
Nietzsche saw walking as a way to engage the mind and spirit, achieving clarity of thought and creativity. He famously said, "All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.”
