Along with declining measures of cardiorespiratory fitness in children and adolescents, temporal trends indicate a steady decline in selected field measures of muscular fitness (i.e., muscular strength, muscular endurance, and muscular power) in youth across the globe." The cause is straightforward. Sports participation is declining and screen time is increasing. Only 1 in 5 adolescents meet international physical activity guidelines. Physical activity, including strength training, is highly desirable for youth. Research shows it offers many substantial physical as well as mental health and performance benefits.
🧮 Did you know? Protein has 3.2 kcal/g, not 4 kcal/g, net metabolizable energy. Most people in fitness are familiar with the Atwater factors of metabolizable energy: 4 kcal/g for carbs and protein, 9 kcal/g for fats (and 6.9 kcal/g for alcohol). These estimates are based on heat production, not the body's capacity for energy expenditure. The body cannot actually use all of that energy to produce ATP. Specifically, the heat of microbial fermentation and obligatory thermogenesis are heat production that don't generate ATP for the body. As a result, protein has only 3.2 kcal/g on average that the body can use, not 4 kcal/g.”
