🦾 Hard times are exactly equal to Good times
Dear Melius Humano,
We don't have health insurance.
There are many reasons for this. The number one is the cost. I don't want to pay that much every month.
I do have car insurance. Let's look at that breakdown.
We have a few guesses about how much our Dell Children's hospital bill will be for five nights of treating our youngest for mastoiditis.
$100k, $50k, $20k are the guesses.
My guess of $20,000 is low because I want it to be that low. $100k is probably too high. That leaves us at around $50,000 or so.
Now let's do some math.
Let's take the average rate for monthly health insurance of $400 that I've been quoted every time I've looked. Now take that number over the past five years of having kids (not factoring in my policy that I've not had my entire adult life), and we get around $24,000 paid into premiums.
Extrapolate that to each kid leaving the nest at 18 and then factor in a 10% inflation rate (probably more), and the total we hypothetically would have paid as a family is around $100,000.
We're going to pay either way. And since insurance companies are FOR PROFIT companies, the math is always in their favor. Healthy people are profit centers, while most sick people are cost centers.
Now let's look at car insurance.
I filed the first car claim in my entire life a couple of years ago when I hit a dear. It was a few thousand dollars to fix, though my bumper still needs to be fixed. (And yes, they tried to deny it… but gave the adjuster such a hard time that I bet it figured it was worth it not to have such a pissed-off customer.)
I currently pay around $190mo for Allison and me. I spent about $90 a month when I was single and $150 or so as a teenager. If we go with a $150 avg for the 21 years I've been driving, I've paid about $37,800 into car insurance. I've claimed less than $3k.
Damn, I'm profitable to these companies. I guess that's why Warren Buffet loves insurance companies—all that float capital he gets to invest in between the time a customer pays in and the average claim(s) they may file during the life of their policy is a very profitable strategy.
Why do I have to pay for other drivers?
Why do I have to pay for sick people in and out of the medical system?
I don't. So I don't.
And if black swans come through and my kids get sick, I'll pay it. I'd have to pay it anyways via health insurance.
This is my very short, very not scientific, back of the napkin math and thought process on insurance. There are obviously different needs for different people and stages of life.

Hard is the same as easy
Without night, there is no day. They are precisely linked and equal because they are the same thing but different. They each define the other.
Duality is a mind-bendy concept. But it’s powerful for understanding life and its constant ups and downs.
There is no such thing as constant growth and happiness, and health. It doesn’t exist.
There are waves. Cycles. Ups and downs.
When we understand this basic rule of life, we can use life's ups and downs to our benefit. We also protect ourselves from letting the lows destroy us and keep us from the inevitable later highs.
Humans suck at gratitude. Probably because we were kept in check by Mother Nature since living in the Wild was brutal.
Yet today we have so much abundance and safety that we gnerally go insane if things are too good or comfortable. (And many people purposely seek out drama for this very reason.)
Red light
In terms of energy, sunlight at Earth's surface is around 52 to 55 percent infrared (above 700 nm ), 42 to 43 percent visible (400 to 700 nm), and 3 to 5 percent ultraviolet (below 400 nm).
Light is nutrition. If you aren’t outside 4+ hours a day, you need a red light routine.
