Better Human, July 18

Is your mind sick? Can you trust anyone? Don't forget the witches. Protect yourself from time thieves.

Dear Human,

Negativity is a sickness of the mind.

So is the victim mentality.

So is the appeal to authority bias.

So is watching the mainstream media

So is delegating your own critical thinking to others.

It’s unfortunate that most people will never truly think for themselves and do their own critical analysis and self-reflection.

In an age where a small group of humans can control the information flowing to billions, you get misaligned incentives which lead to distortions of truth at the hands of consolidated power.

In a very simplified nutshell, this means you have to be a skeptic. You have to question everyone and everything that comes at you. You have to expend calories to think hard and deeply about every belief in your head. And you have to change your mind when the data is overwhelming.

And what you absolutely must not do is cling to what you think you know. Because that will leave you stuck and making big mistakes.

Think for yourself. Question everything.

Figure out what the incentives are for each source of information that’s trying to influence you. Do those incentives align with truth or with what’s better for an individual or a group with a certain agenda?

Don’t forget the witches

Religious men used to burn women alive for accusations of “witchcraft.”

They would torture women until they confessed in an attempt to stop the pain.

Then they burn them alive.

If you don’t know history, you don’t know how brutally disgusting and dangerous our species really is.

This Day in History

Disneyland opens

Disneyland, Walt Disney’s metropolis of nostalgia, fantasy and futurism, opens on July 17, 1955. The $17 million theme park was built on 160 acres of former orange groves in Anaheim, California, and soon brought in staggering profits. Today, Disneyland hosts more than 18 million visitors a year, who spend close to $3 billion.

Philosopher José Ortega y Gasset on the power of attention:

Actress Tallulah Bankhead on taking action:

"If I had to live my life again, I’d make the same mistakes, only sooner."

Three steps to exceptional results:

1) Do less. Stop dividing your attention.

2) Do it right now. Once you have identified the essential, go fast. Maintain a bias toward action.

3) Do it the right way. Acting quickly doesn't mean acting carelessly. Get to work right away, but keep working on it until it's right."

This one got me

Sometimes I laugh at modernity and sometimes I feel it’s hopeless and other times both

How to destroy a generation

Fiat, Bitcoin, and Inflation

The smartest people I know readily admit how much they don’t know… and that’s where they tend to focus their energy—on what they don’t know.

Communism, Marxism, Socialism, and other collectivist ideas are a violation of nature and prone to human error, and while they may sound good on paper, their effects are catastrophic for human life.

"Workers of the world, unite!", Marx and Engels commanded in the Communist Manifesto. "You have nothing to lose but your chains!". The idea was to get the workers of all nations to cooperate in order to overthrow the Bourgeoisie and revolutionize the world. Turns out they had quite a lot to lose and that they didn't necessarily lose their chains in the process either.

Social media is…

Surveillance and mind control and propaganda dissemination

To change mind’s, you have to give them a new story

One thing I think about how humans work—the only thing that can replace one story is another story.”

Confirmation Bias

Confirmation Bias: Why you only see what you want to see

Your ego protects you.

It wants to think you are right and good and nothing but that.

If anything threatens your self-identity, it fights back because a threat to your identity is a threat to your life in the eyes of your biology.

Our ancestors had to be hypersensitive to their social status in a group. You wouldn't want to upset your status in your group because that could get you killed or exiled or sexually ostracized, all very bad things for your reproductive success.

So you have built-in biases designed to keep you socially safe.

This is why it's soo hard to go against the group and why it's so hard to admit mistakes.

Hindsight bias is a psychological phenomenon that allows people to convince themselves after an event that they accurately predicted it before it happened.
