🦾 1/3 of your life is work
Dear Melius Humano (Better Human),
I’m writing this on Christmas Eve.
The kids and Allison are in Wimberley, an hour away, and I will meet them around 2 pm.
I work every day. I want to work every day.
You consider this through your paradigm.
If you don’t enjoy your work, you can’t imagine someone working every day and wanting to.
If you love what you do, you get it and nod in understanding.
Life is short.
Spending your precious time on work you don’t enjoy wastes your life.
There’s no way else to put it.
Sure, you have bills, responsibilities, obligations, etc.
But you also have massive waste in your habits, routines, and spending.
You could completely change your expectations about how you’re supposed to live.
You could move to the Philippines for a year and live lavishly on a couple of grand a month. Then you could use that time to figure out what’s next and formulate a plan.
You could move in with your parents, share a house (co-living) with another couple, family, or roommate, or get a small apartment and downsize for a while.
You can do absolutely anything you want to do.
But only when you break your paradigm—how you view the world and your life.
When you break the expectations and assumptions built into your worldview, you can only see alternatives, many of which are insightful, helpful, and better than your current perspective.
Maybe you don’t need to do any of that. Maybe you just need to add something to your life to balance it out a bit.
You could start a blog, a newsletter like this (Substack is free), a Twitter or IG account, an AI company using ChatGPT, a startup and raise money, take on a coaching client, teach an individual, group, or class how to do something like cook, knit, train dogs, natural brith, cloth diaper, etc.
You could commit to learning a new topic like philosophy, engineering, math, history, geology, whatever.
You could start a weekly meet-up around a topic or idea.
You could start a daily reading habit.
You could (should) get off mindless social media consumption that makes you compare and feel less than.
You could start meditating a few minutes each day.
You can do anything.
It’s entirely up to you.
Also, it’s OK.
Whatever you choose is OK.
There is no right or wrong. There is only useful or unuseful.
Action and experimentation are how you add useful to your life and cull unuseful.
If there’s anything I can do to help, send me an email.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
-Colin
Tired all the time? It might be your minerals.
Fatigue is becoming more prevalent in our modern society. One main reason for this is our nutrient-depleting food supply.
As foods become more industrialized, more heavily processed, and monocropping strips the soil of naturally occurring nutrients so that farmers have to rely more heavily on petrochemicals and fertilizer inputs, the net result is your food is LACKING. The net effect is less nutritious food. Each year that goes by, America gets sicker. And the numbers are still growing. The trend has not reversed.
Magnesium is an essential mineral needed for over 600 biochemical processes in the human body. It’s that important.
I take 4-6 Wild Magnesium caps a day. It’s helped me ward off that afternoon slump and has improved my energy levels and focus across the board.
Our Wild Magnesium Complex has 7x Forms of magnesium to give you what your body needs without having to buy multiple products. Just take a dose 1-3x a day to optimize your magnesium levels and prevent the following signs of mineral deficiency:
loss of appetite
fatigue and weakness
shaking
pins and needles
muscle spasms
hyper-excitability
sleepiness
General stress, anxiety and inflammation
As you can see, magnesium is important. Not having enough magnesium is a big problem.
A once or twice a day serving can give you multiple forms of magnesium and help you optimize your levels.

Better Human Masterminds
Masterminds are group events centered around engaging conversations and useful and open dialogue. You’re guaranteed to always learn something about yourself and life.
We’ve been doing these in Austin for a couple years. They’ve grown into a monthly thing. I’m working turning these into a movement. I’d love to see these happening all around the world. We need to bring people together more than ever to combat our meaning crisis.
I will be sharing every event we do in Austin here, including the exact scripts I use to invite people, to the format of the talk and discussions.
Here are some pics from last event.
Logseq - Free open source alternative to Roam Research
I started using Logseq daily.
I used Roam in the past, but they paywalled it, and I fell out of the habit.
One thing that’s so amazing about this piece of software is how it grows over time as your knowledge graph, hashtags, and linking grow.
My problem has always been going back. I’m great at moving forward, but I struggle with reviewing, reflecting, and going back to things I’ve done in the past.
I know there’s a treasure trove, but stuff gets lost in the sheer amount of apps, folders, files, emails, etc.
Start with the daily journal and map out thoughts, ideas, quotes, and to do lists. You can even use the calendar picker to remind yourself of upcoming events. Create #people tags to track people in your life, a personal CRM. So powerful.
I highly recommend watching some videos on the software and trying it yourself.
What is profit and why should we celebrate it?
Profit is what you have left when you get paid for giving someone something they want, and you've covered your costs associated with doing so.
If you give someone what they want, whether it's food, power, a car, Pokemon cards, or a piece of software, they pay you for it. And you figure out how to have extra money left over on top of your fulfillment costs of that product or service.
The irony lost on many anti-capitalists is no one FORCES an individual to give their money to a company to buy a product or service. (Except when the state is involved, which is a topic for another day.)
Individuals freely give you their money in exchange for products and services.
That is a free market.
And it is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena there is.
This is why unrestrained market capitalism has brought more prosperity to more humans than anything else in human history. And it will continue to do so despite all the human interventions trying to prevent it from doing so.
No one forces you to participate in markets. You could live in the woods and produce all your own needs that way. Good luck doing that alone.
It's astonishing how few modern humans understand what has brought them the massive abundance they live in—and take for granted.
In our age of complexity and information overload, you win by focusing on the basics. Being a first principles thinker is the path to mastery of your environment in the digital age and, more importantly, yourself.

Train your mind, Train your thinking, Train your philosophy
It’s not just physical training; it’s mental frameworks, how to think, how to think effectively, how to stand by your principles, and how to remain true to who you are in the face of societal pressure to conform.
Building a personal philosophy and standing by that and your principles rather than being influenced by the mob.
Being truly who you are unapologetic. Stop hedging. Stop pretending. Stop pleasing.
